Chapter 16

Harriet and James were the first to arrive at breakfast the next morning. He took a bite of his croissant and made a face.

“Don’t say it,” she said with a laugh. “You could have done it better.”

He grinned and took another bite.

“Okay, I won’t,” he said when he’d swallowed. “But I could have. On the other hand, it is free ’cause of your stitching thing. And I didn’t have to cook anything to make it happen.”

“You love to cook.”

“I do, but not twenty-four-seven.”

She sipped her orange juice and watched as Stephanie talked to the women at her table for a few more minutes then got up with two of them and approached Harriet’s table.

“Sorry to interrupt your breakfast, but your friend Mavis was talking the other day about some strange stuff going on with jewelry in the hotel.”

“Yeah. I encountered the hotel maid supposedly returning Mavis’s necklace, which she claimed was accidentally scooped up with the dirty towels. It’s a costume piece, so Mavis wasn’t worried. And she is certain it was in her suitcase the last time she saw it. Then she and Connie heard some other classmates talking about a necklace that was temporarily missing and then showed up again with its broken clasp repaired. Once again, no crime, just weird.”

One of the women, a slender blonde, said . “That sounds like what happened in our room. Kathy and I…” She looked at the third woman. “We both went on a cruise the week before this conference. You know how cruise ships always have great buys on jewelry?”

Harriet and James looked blank.

“Anyway, trust me, they have great deals, and on sea days they have all kinds of extra-special deals.”

Kathy picked up the story..

“We both bought necklaces and were going to wear them out to dinner last night. They were very different pieces, but each was in the same kind of navy-blue box with the gold company logo on it. When we took out our boxes, the other person’s necklace was in it.”

“That’s weird,” James agreed.

Harriet set her glass down.

“It is strange, but since nothing was taken, I’m not sure what can be done.”

“They could talk to your buddy Bruce,” James suggested.

“Bruce is the hotel security guard I dealt with when I got hit in the eye,” Harriet explained. “That’s a good idea.” She smiled at James. “I haven’t found the police in this town to be very sensitive. James is right—Bruce will probably have a better idea about what you can do.”

Lauren sat down at the table with a bowl of cereal.

“I didn’t hear everything, but if you’re talking about another jewelry problem-that-isn’t-a-problem, I’d emphasize the fact that someone clearly made unauthorized entry into your room. Unless you assume it was the maid, in which case she wasn’t unauthorized, merely digging through your possessions.”

Harriet picked up her fork.

“Maybe the police should be looking at the cleaning staff for the attacks and murder, too. I mean, someone is coming and going from a lot of rooms without a problem.
